On the very first page of Jean Giono’s “The Man Who Planted Trees”, it is stated that in order to meet an exceptional person you have to observe them for many years. If we watch the protagonist of the story over several decades - and the story of other planters in Brazil, India, etc. - we would see how, slowly over the years, they leave forests, built acorn by acorn, one sapling at a time. When we look at the landscape, we see its huge life project, built of small, generous and patient gestures, that wait many years to learn about their wonderful results. If we look at the trail that we leave in our daily lives, built of small careless gestures, we see a sea of plastic, extinct species, deforestation and climate change. We urgently need to look at the impact of our actions - not only today but yesterday and tomorrow in our lives.
