Mario Lúcio is a central figure of Cape Verde’s arts scene. Singer, composer, novelist, poet and playwright, he was Minister of Culture of Cape Verde, between 2011 and 2016. He is also one of his country’s most prominent thinkers. His latest book, “Manifesto A Crioulização” (Manifesto for Creolisation), has inspired debates in various parts of the world.
But it’s music that brings him to Guimarães – in order to present his latest compositions, recorded over recent months with a new group, Os Kriols, formed by Portuguese musicians, that is committed to the sounds of the musical traditions of several countries. The album, recorded by Mario Lúcio and Os Kriols, will be released around the time of the concert, which is part of the Terra cycle. The performance will also include his manifesto song “Hino à Gratidão” (Hymn to Gratitude), released in 2021, which has been adapted to several languages, by artists such as Teresa Willow, Djavan or Youssou Ndour.
