In 1972, Maria
Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa published Novas
Cartas Portuguesas (New Portuguese Letters), based on Cartas Portuguesas (Portuguese Letters), an epistolary novel published anonymously in 1669, that has
been attributed to the nun, Mariana Alcoforado. The book was promptly withdrawn
from the market. The fascist regime accused it of “the insanity of pornography
and an attack on public morals”, and its authors were put on trial. In the year
of the 50th anniversary of the book's publication, Catarina Rôlo Salgueiro and
Leonor Buescu will close the Gil Vicente Festivals with "Ainda Marianas"
(Still Marianas), a stage play that aims to stimulate a discussion about the
collective memory of a country, its peoples and their time.
