“Beautiful People” doesn't hide disabilities, nor does it package it with sentiments of pity. Rui Horta highlights the brutality and injustice with which society treats persons with disabilities. Some gestures will seem shocking, such as a body that is cruelly thrown from a wheelchair. When the performers approach the stage, with maggots on their heads, the spectators will perhaps feel uncomfortable to watch, sensing a dissonant knot in the centre of their brains. But it will be above all in their hearts that the spectators will discover the formula to untie that knot. They will then discover the meaning of this simultaneously disturbing and sensitive work, built from fragments. In the end, like the performers, the spectators will be left with a tangle of stars in their hands... and they will say: these are beautiful people.
