We don’t know which came first - Rock and Roll or glitter. But we know that each made its own contribution to a musical revolution in the 20th century. To talk about Rock music is to talk about a big part of our recent history: the Vietnam War, sexual freedom, civil rights for African Americans. Rock was a kind of test tube in which new kinds of freedom were tested. Knowing the history of Rock is to take a trip to the youth of our forebears. It’s about making peace with the embarrassing dance moves of our grandparents, which after all is nothing more than a clumsy imitation of Elvis’ gyrating hips. It’s about dancing towards the future and peeling back the skin of old conventions.
